How to make Magic Carpet work in Win95/98:

  • You may be able to simply double-click the carpet.exe.
  • If not, manually create a DOS Shortcut for the carpet.exe.  For most systems, you should be able to set the Advanced Program Settings of the shortcut to "Prevent MS-DOS based programs from detecting Windows" and leave all other settings alone.
  • Upon starting the game, you will be taken to the sound configuration screen.  Your soundcard should be set to settings recognizeable in DOS for Magic Carpet to work properly.  If necessary, use Windows Device Manager to change the soundcard settings, then select the same settings or use the autodetection in the Magic Carpet sound configuration window.  With sound card properly configured, you sould be able to play and hear the game.

If the game runs too fast:

  • Make sure you're in Hi-Res mode (press 'r' during gameplay to toggle this) and that all other detail options are on (shadows, reflections, soften, and sky).  This will place a higher load on your processor, help slow down the game, and improve the game's appearance.
  • If it's still to fast, use a slow-down utility such as MoSlo.

Magic Carpet crashes when I try to switch spells.

  • The retail CD version of Magic Carpet may crash consistently on newer machines (PII or better) when attempting to switch between spells, making gameplay impossible.  I have tried countless things to make it work, on several different machines (including configuring and using real DOS mode drivers), to no avail.

  • SOLUTION:  The downloadable Plus version does not have this problem.  See the files page for download information.

Magic Carpet intermittently crashes right when things start getting hectic.

  • This problem seems to have to do with memory issues, as it occurs when there is a very high number of objects being tracked by the game's engine.  It used to occur on my old 486 as well, so it is not Windows related.  No known solution.

How to make Magic Carpet II work in Win95/98

  • I experienced frequent crashes running the game from CD.  These crashes were greatly reduced by copying the entire game to harddrive.  The downloadable version should also work alright.
  • Configure a DOS Shortcut and soundcard settings for the game (see tips in the Magic Carpet section above).

  • This problem also occurred with Magic Carpet.  See above.
